Understanding Hajj

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. This sacred pilgrimage to Makkah occurs during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

The Three Types of Hajj

There are three types of Hajj:

• Hajj al-Tamattu': Umrah followed by Hajj with a break in between
• Hajj al-Qiran: Umrah and Hajj combined without a break
• Hajj al-Ifrad: Hajj only without Umrah

Day-by-Day Hajj Rituals

Day 1: 8th Dhu al-Hijjah (Yawm al-Tarwiyah)

Pilgrims travel to Mina and spend the day in prayer and reflection.

Day 2: 9th Dhu al-Hijjah (Yawm al-Arafah)

The most important day of Hajj. Pilgrims stand on the plain of Arafah from noon until sunset, engaging in prayer and supplication.

Day 3: 10th Dhu al-Hijjah (Yawm al-Nahr)

Pilgrims perform the stoning of the devil, sacrifice an animal, and complete other rituals.

Days 4-6: Tashreeq Days

Pilgrims continue with the stoning ritual and complete the remaining Hajj rites.
